Townley Rigg
Townley Rigg was born in Charles County, Maryland, between November 1751
and November 1752, the son of Thomas Rigg, Sr.
His father died in 1761 and his widow, Mary Peel (Bowie)
remarried William Parsons. Townley is named in the 19 Mar 1770 account of
Thomas Rigg's estate filed by William Parsons and Mary Peel, his wife.
(Mary Peel Bowie was too young to be the mother of
Townley Rigg.)
Townley Rigg married Benedicta Buchanan on 28 Apr 1776 in Fairfax Co., VA. Benedicta was the daughter of James and Isabella Buchanan. Her father died when she was young. She was three years old when his estate was settled. Townley Rigg had three children:
Following Townley's death, Benedicta married Richard Wittington Proctor on 12 Jul 1788. Benedicta died 19 Jul 1818, shortly after her arrival in Illinois. The origin of Townley's name is unknown and obscured by myth. Given that two brothers and a sister had sons named Townley and a third brother had a grandson named Townley, it seems likely that he would have a recent ancestor surnamed Townley. If such a connection exists, it appears to be through his mother. His parents lived on land owned by John Bruce and later by his sons, Charles Bruce and Townley Bruce. Townley Bruce's name derives from his mother, whose maiden name was Judith Townley. Judith Townley was the grandmother of Townley Maddox, Judith Townley Winter, and another Townley Bruce. Is it possible that Townley Rigg's mother was Francis Bruce and that he was also a grandson of Judith Townley?
