Charles Rigg Family Bible
The Charles Rigg "Family Bible" presents some challenges for the genealogist.
What exists consists of microfilmed images of Xerox pages on LDS microfilm
#1443520 Item 5.
The pages are from research done by Edith Jensen in the 1950s in support of her
DAR application. Unfortunately, the original document is not available for
examination.
There are several difficulties with the text, but it remains an important
source of information.
The first difficulty is establishing whose Bible it was. Although it contains
information on the Charles Rigg family, many of the entries appear to have been
written by members of the James Rigg family. It is entirely possible that the
"Charles Rigg Family Bible" is, in fact, the "James Rigg Family Bible."
The second difficulty is establishing when the entries were made. The earlier
dates were clearly recorded long after the event described. There are some
inaccuracies in the earlier dates. For example, it shows the marriage of
Charles and Elizabeth as December 30, 1782. The marriage was performed by Rev.
John MacPherson of Wm. & Mary Parish, Charles Co., MD, who recorded it at
the time: December 28, 1781.
A third difficulty is inconsistent information. For example, two of Charles
and Elizabeth's children, John and Thomas, were supposed to have been born three
months apart!
A fourth difficulty is missing information for several of Charles and Elizabeth's
children. Much of the missing information relates to older children who did not
move to Wabash County, Illinois. For example, it does not record the marriage
of Thomas Rigg, even though Charles was the administator of his estate and
guardian of his minor children.
