Declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the Act of Congress of the
7th June 1832
Commonwealth of Kentucky, Greenup County
On this 25th day of Nov. 1832, personally appeared before me,
Horatio Cattlett, a Justice of the peace of the county court
of said Greenup County, (being a court of Record) Charles Rigg
a resident of said county (near the mouth of Big Sandy) state
of Kentucky, aged Seventy Six (76) years the 8 June last
who being first duly sworn, according to law, doth on his oath,
make the following declaration, in order to obtain the benefit
of the provision made by the act of Congress passed June 7, 1832,
that he enlisted in the army of the United States on the 29th
March (or about that day) in the year 1777 - at Port Tobacco in
Charles County, Maryland, for the Term of Three years into
Capt. Starret's Company, in the Reg't Commanded by Colo
Stone of Maryland Troops. That he enlisted as a private - and
went immediately into service, marched from Port Tobacco to an-
napolis where he was inocolated for the Small Pox. As soon as
the company recovered from the small pox, marched to Philadelphia.
There they took charge of some prisoners & Tories & went with them to
Little York. Then returned to Head quarters near Philadelphia.
The first winter after enlistment lay at Wilmington. He was in
the battle of Brandywine during the first year. Met the enemy first
between the head of Elk & Philadelphia, then turned back & crossed
Brandywine creek in the evening & marched to a saw mill about
two miles from the ford & staid there during the night. In the morning
the enemy attempted to cross at the ford & were repulsed. They then went
above & crossed & took possession of the heights. Declarant then marched to
Brandywine Meeting house where the main battle was fought, lost the
