Thomas Rigg, Jr. (circa 1745 - 1796)
Thomas Rigg, Jr. was the son of Thomas Rigg, Sr.,
who died in Charles Co., MD in 1761. An account of
Thomas Rigg, Sr.'s estate filed 19 Mar 1770 lists Thomas, Jr. who was "at age"
at the time. Given two younger siblings were also over 21 in 1770 and three
others were under 21 at the time, Thomas, Jr. was likely 24 to 26 years old in
1770, and would have been born ca. 1744-1746.
Susannah Rigg's will of
7 Aug 1773 left her young son, Townley, under the care of her brother, and
nominated the aforesaid brother, Thomas Rigg, Jr., to be executor of her
estate.
In 1775 Thomas Rigg, Jr. married Sarah, widow of Alexander Hannah of Charles
Co., MD. Thomas and Sarah were administrators of the estate of Alexander Hannah
In 1777, Thomas Rigg, Jr. paid money to the estate of Joseph Edelin of
Charles Co., MD, according the account of the latter's
estate
The Charles County Orphan's Court Proceedings for 23 Feb 1778 directs
Thomas Rigg to show cause why he has not passed final account as
executor of Susanah Rigg.
It also directs Thomas Rigg and Mary, his wife, to show cause why they have not passed final account as administrators of
Alexander Hannah.
On 05 May 1778, Thomas Rigg and Sarah, his wife, proved Alexander Hannah's Inventory
appraised 06 Sep 1775.
On 22 May 1779 Thomas Rigg and Sarah, his wife, filed Alexander Hannan's
Final Account.
On 22 May 1779 Thomas Rigg filed Susanah Rigg's first account. He requested
further time to pass an additional account by reason of a legacy left the
deceased by Benjamin Douglass Sr. of £25, not yet received.
On 25 Sep 1779, Thomas Rigg was mentioned in the first account of Benjamin King.
On 23 Nov 1779, Samuel Edelen's final account shows tobacco received of Thomas Rigg
for rent.
Thomas and Sarah farmed in Charles Co., MD until about Jul 1784, when they moved
to the Henry Co., VA area. (Thomas Rigg appeared in the 1783 tax list for Charles Co., MD.
Thomas Rigg appears on the Henry Co., VA Personal Property Tax List for 1784, 1785,
1786, 1787, 1788, 1789 and 1790.
Sarah's daughter, Mary, married Samuel Philpott in Henry Co., VA on 12 Jan 1785.)
Thomas Rigg appears on the Stokes Co., NC Personal Property Tax List for 1791, 1792,
1793 and 1794.
On 24 Apr 1793 Thomas and Sarah purchased land on
Beaver Island Creek in Stokes Co., NC. This adjoined land purchased on the same
day by Thomas's brother, Charles.
Thomas Rigg appears regularly in Stokes County public records until his
death in 1796.
When Thomas Rigg purchased 100 adjacent acres
on 03 Feb 1795 Charles Rigg and Townly Rigg witnessed the transaction.
Thomas Rigg died by Sep 1796. His widow and oldest son were appointed administrators of his estate.
An inventory of his estate had been completed and was entered into the court record at the same
time.
The administrators, Sarah and Stephen Rigg, sold the moveable
estate of Thomas Rigg on 14 Oct 1796.
Purchasers included Charles Rigg, John Ward, Silas Crump and Robert Hanner.
An account of Thomas Rigg's estate was filed on 06 Dec 1796.
At the same time, Thomas Rigg's minor children chose a guardian or had one appointed by the court.
On 16 Sep 1809, Zachariah Rigg, of Cabell Co., VA, gave his Power of Attorney
to sell his portion of a tract of land in Stokes Co., NC, that was part of the
estate of Thomas Rigg.
On 08 Jan 1847, Sarah Hannah Riggs (then Sarah Crump) was deposed in St. Clair Co., AL regarding the heirship of John P. Crump.
She stated that she was born in MD to Thomas Riggs and his wife Sarah Riggs. She married Silas Crump in NC and subsequently lived in GA
before moving to St. Clair Co., AL.
